THE FIRST phase of renovation works to Sagres fortress, costing more than 134,000 euros, is due to be completed by January.
The work, which started in October and is being financed by the national tourism board, Turismo de Portugal, includes the restoration of the fortified tower and tunnel, which provides access to the Praça d’Armas of the fortress, where the ticket office is located.
The total amount being invested in the monument is more than 254,000 euros, with the second phase of restoration expected to be complete by October 2009.
This work is part of a national investment plan of 100 million euros, to be used by 2009 to restore and improve tourism facilities and promote events across Portugal.
According to the national tourism board, Sagres fortress was the fifth most visited monument in Portugal in 2007, with more than 270,000 visitors.
