Madeleine McCann's father has returned to Portugal for the first time since he and his wife were named formal suspects in connection with their daughter's disappearance.
Gerry McCann flew to Faro airport in the Algarve yesterday to meet with British officials before travelling to Lisbon where he is due to meet family lawyers.
Mr McCann and his wife Kate, from Rothley, Leicestershire, were named as official suspects – arguidos – in connection with Madeleine's disappearance in September 2007; four months after the three-year-old went missing.
Last July the arguido status for the couple, as well as for British expat Robert Murat, was lifted as the Portuguese investigation into Madeleine's disappearance was dropped.
Mr and Mrs McCann have vowed not to give up on the search for their daughter, who went missing from her parents' villa in Praia da Luz on May 3rd 2007.
"We think there is still a very good chance Maddie could be found alive, and that's why we want the search to continue," Mr McCann said of his trip to Portugal.
"The purpose of this visit was to look at what can still be done in the search.
"We want to be looking forward because we want to find our daughter."
